Keeping the Beast at Bay

Now that you’ve had The Talk and your teenager knows that the privileges must be earned, there’s been an enormous change in your family dynamics. You’ve stopped feeding and paying attention to the Beast, and it’s withering away. Now we want to keep it that way.

Ask yourself: “Which of my own behaviors feeds the Beast? Am I being reactive or using a negative tone? Am I easily roped into trying to get my teen to manage her responsibilities? Am I always being a “nice guy” and not holding my kid to high enough standards?” That’s where you’re going to want to be vigilant about your own behavior. You want to let the Beast go hungry.

In so many control battle–based relationships, parent-teen arguing is at the core. So one thing you want to be careful about is not initiating or getting sucked into an argument. Remember, we all react and argue from time to time. But when we’re dealing with the control battle, we want to go that extra mile to avoid feeding the Beast that’s been destroying our family. Thankfully, there’s a great tool we can use to avoid arguments.
